One Summer more corn planting
Four Cherokee students planted corn in Georgia near the home of Cherokee Chief Major Ridge. Just before the Trail of Tears, the Cherokee were told that they had "but one summer more to plant corn in this country." We planted corn and (hopefully) told the world that we were still here.

Excerpt from "The Watauga Democrat", October 24, 1918 article about Appalachian Training School

The Watauga Democrat article from July 13, 1899, announces the establishment of Watauga Academy
"We are indeed proud to be able to state we are to have established here in the near future a school of high grade. The question of erecting a good school-building has been agitated here for the past few weeks, and on last Saturday a meeting of those interested was called and the handsome sum of one thousand dollars, which is the principal part of the amount wanted, was raised for its erection, and we can now state positively that the school is a certainty. The building when completed will be the best one by far that has ever been built in the county, and will be a thing of beauty, and, we hope, a joy forever. Trustees have been appointed , and an industrious building committee is at work, and it is hoped that the house will be ready by Oct. 1st. The building will be erected in the grove near D.B. Dougherty's mill and the site is lovely. Professors D.D. and B.B. Dougherty will have charge of the school, this fact alone being enough to ensure its permanent success. It will not be a local affair, but a boarding school that cannot be surpassed by any county in this section as to educational advantages, etc., and it is the intention of the Professors to bring to this school young men, boys and girls from all the surrounding country."

Judy Gentry
The Student Senate appointed freshman Judy Gentry to the Homecoming Court to ensure diverse representation. The Judiciary denied the appointment because Gentry was not voted in. As a compromise, Gentry was added as a “special added feature of the 1972 Homecoming activities.” Gentry was the first African-American woman on any court at Appalachian State.

Petition in Support of Gender Studies in the Core Curriculum
"PETITION IN SUPPORT OF GENDER STUDIES IN THE CORE CURRICULUM: Dear Core Curriculum Council Members, Whereas the Appalachian State University General Bulletin states that 'Appalachian State University's undergraduate program seeks to educate men and women for the twenty-first century,' and whereas the bulletin goes on to state that the educational goals for every baccalaureate level graduate of Appalachian State should include 'an awareness of the world's diversity of cultural and national experiences, identities and values,' as well as 'an understanding of the issues and problems facing the contemporary world,' and whereas consideration given to both men and women who contribute to academic inquiry, and to culture as a whole, is essential to such awareness and understanding, and whereas currently there is no policy, written or otherwise, which guarantees that our Core Curriculum provides such a balanced educational perspective, therefore, we the undersigned support a gender studies requirement being added to the Core Curriculum, and we support the recommendation that the new 'multi-cultural' designator be considered as a logical home for this addition. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
