Judy Gentry The Student Senate appointed freshman Judy Gentry to the Homecoming Court to ensure diverse representation. The Judiciary denied the appointment because Gentry was not voted in. As a compromise, Gentry was added as a “special added feature of the 1972 Homecoming activities.” Gentry was the first African-American woman on any court at Appalachian State.

Petition in Support of Gender Studies in the Core Curriculum "PETITION IN SUPPORT OF GENDER STUDIES IN THE CORE CURRICULUM: Dear Core Curriculum Council Members, Whereas the Appalachian State University General Bulletin states that 'Appalachian State University's undergraduate program seeks to educate men and women for the twenty-first century,' and whereas the bulletin goes on to state that the educational goals for every baccalaureate level graduate of Appalachian State should include 'an awareness of the world's diversity of cultural and national experiences, identities and values,' as well as 'an understanding of the issues and problems facing the contemporary world,' and whereas consideration given to both men and women who contribute to academic inquiry, and to culture as a whole, is essential to such awareness and understanding, and whereas currently there is no policy, written or otherwise, which guarantees that our Core Curriculum provides such a balanced educational perspective, therefore, we the undersigned support a gender studies requirement being added to the Core Curriculum, and we support the recommendation that the new 'multi-cultural' designator be considered as a logical home for this addition. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
